There have been times when I’ve thought to myself and even expressed to close friends that I felt that I should be further along in life, that I should have made a mark, that I should have achieved more, prospered more, profited more. Then I came to a place where I had to ask myself whose timetable are you on and who are you comparing yourself to? It was at that moment that I had to draw from the well of God’s Word for the answers that would bring me to a place of peace and ultimately rest.

Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 KJV) Reading

Like so many who have come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, I wanted to do all that was in my heart that I thought would bring Him glory. But I soon realized that all I was doing was spinning my wheels–motor running at full speed, but going nowhere fast. I would start this thing and that thing and soon found myself bored. Why? Didn’t I want to work in the things of God? Wasn’t I committed to doing a good job? Was I a quitter? Did I not count the cost? What was it? I came to realize that I was following an illusion. So many times we get caught up in what someone else is doing, or what they think we should be doing, or even what we think we should be doing, without checking in with the one who enables us to do.

God has placed in each of us the ability to move forward with the potential for greatness, but we must first go through the process. Ahhhh! That’s it! — the process (a series of actions or operations marked by gradual changes that lead toward growth and a particular result or end). The process — a time of learning, of growing, of developing, of becoming. This is what Jesus meant. He wants to teach us knowledge, give us wisdom and make us understand, “for precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little”. It’s during the process that we find rest and are refreshed. It’s during the process that we realize that it takes more effort to do things in the flesh than it takes if the Spirit of God leads us. For when we are led by His Spirit, the race becomes easier to run. Adding God to any race gives you the GRACE (the enabling power of God that helps you to be and do all that He has ordained) to complete the course. So why is it then that we continue to struggle to do and to be?

It’s because we have not so learned Christ. Jesus sent to us the teacher of all teachers, so why do we not allow Him to teach us? It’s because of stubbornness and hard heartedness that we resist the Holy Ghost — the one sent along side to help us. Oh, but when we do learn (after having suffered through many things), we become that unique flame with the ability to light our corner of the world.

Whether it is in ministry or the market place, our light shines and people see it thereby glorifying the object of our love, and faith–Jesus Christ. Our heavenly vision starts to take on character and becomes further along, an accomplishment, a work in progress. We no longer compare ourselves with others but acknowledge that we are where God wants us because we are in the process. We have not arrived but we have been apprehended. We do more than we thought we ever could and our strength is renewed as we go. We’re no longer struggle to do or become. We are because GOD IS and we do because GOD CAN. Before we realize what has happened, we are rejoicing in what He’s doing through us. We are refreshed by what He’s completing and the work is no longer boring or dissatisfying but a glorious adventure. As we adjust our focus with our vision becoming clearer, we find that the mystery which has been hidden from ages and generations is now made manifest to us who believe and that God makes known the riches of this mystery of being yoked with Jesus.

So, wherever you are in the process is where God wants you to be. You are not behind because you are walking in the steps He has ordered for you on the journey to your destination. I want to encourage you to get a red-letter edition of the Holy Bible and read the Red. Then Enter Into His Rest.
