New International Version (NIV)
“The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty.
I have been in an intense class for the past 8 weeks on the study of the Book of Zechariah. I say it is intense because not only is it every Tuesday morning but 4 and 5 hours of study each night. Now I have to admit the Book of Zechariah is not an easy book to read and for a while I began to think that Zechariah was on some real powerful hallucinogenic drugs but as I got more into my studies the Lord kept bringing me back to the 1st chapter, specifically verses 2 and 3.
The Bible heading for this chapter in the NIV states A Call to Return to the Lord.
Basically this is what was spoken to Zechariah by God, “Return to me and I will return to you.”
I began to ask how can so much wickedness continue to go on around us everyday and God not be angry?
If God is Love then why is there so much hate between our brothers and sisters in Christ?
If God is Love then why can’t we see past the color of a person’s skin?
If God is Love why are so many unborn babies being slaughtered everyday?
If God is Love why are children sold into slavery right in our own backyard?
If God is Love why did people have to die who attended a movie in Colorado?
If God is Love why were millions of Jews slaughtered at the command of one man who so many people followed?
This list of “If’s” could go on forever, but when God says, “write”, I write and when God says “that’s good”, I stop writing. Nothing more and nothing less.
Yes, God is Love and He wants us to return to Him. Cry out to God. He already knows what is going on. This started with me and after what God revealed to “me” about “me” I realized that silence was no longer an option. God loves you and He wants the best for you but we must first get our hearts right.
Always remember this. It is not about you but all about God! If God is for you then who can be against you?
As a child one of the first verses I learned in Sunday School was Matthew 5:16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (KJV)
The Message Bible says it best: Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand-shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Do what God has called you to do. Whether you are sitting in an office, a restaurant or at church. Your light must shine and the only way that is going to happen is if we return back to God first.
